S&SYS, spun off from Samsung Heavy Industries, seizes 47trillion Korean won Ballast water management market
2018-06-24
The U.S Approves Ballast management system technology.

S&SYS, which was spun off from Samsung Heavy Industries in September last year, has obtained the USCG type approval. Ship’s ballast water is seawater that is filled in a ship to maintain its center of gravity. Due to the international Maritime Organization’s (IMO) strengthened environmental regulations, the market for ballast water management system is expected to reach 47 trillion Korean won by 2024.

Bae Jae-hyuck, the CEO of S&SYS, said on 24th “S&SYS is the second Korean company to receive approval for a U.S Coast Guard(USCG) ballast water management system for ships on last 15th.”

Ship’s ballast water which is sea water includes foreign marine ecosystem such as shell and plankton from the departure port, which has been pointed out for damaging the marine ecosystem by discharging it into the arrival site. In order to prevent such problems,
IMO mandated that newly built ships for international voyage purpose are to be equipped with a separate treatment equipment to sterilize ballast water from last Sep, 2017. Even ships in operation must install ballast water management system by September 2024. The ballast water management system sterilizes microorganisms in ballast water by means of electrolysis, ultraviolet projection, and chemical management.
